Paper scorecards vs a scoring app: the organiser's call
This one is for the person running the event, not the group deciding who holds the pencil. The real question is what you hand out at check-in and what lands on the scoring desk when the carts come back.
If you want the on-course basics, read how to keep score in a golf scramble.
Two kinds of app
Know which one you are choosing before you plan the desk.
- Group scoring app. One phone per team keeps that team's card. The desk gets each team's total when the group finishes. Scrambled Eggs is this kind: Ambrose and scramble team scoring, course finder, and shot contribution on iOS.
- Outing software. Every team joins one event with a code or QR, and scores feed a central desk and a field-wide board during the round. Built for large outings.
Most of this guide applies to both. Where it differs, it says so.
What you hand out at check-in
Paper:
- One scorecard per team, pre-filled with team name, starting hole, and cart number.
- Pencils, plus spares.
- A clipboard or card holder if rain is possible.
- Instructions on who signs and where cards go.
App:
- One named scorer per team, with the app installed before the briefing. Put that ask in the confirmation email.
- Team names and players that match the scramble pairing sheet. With a group app, each scorer enters their team once at the tee. With outing software, you load teams in advance and hand out the event code or QR.
- A fallback paper card in the cart for dead phones.
- Instructions on how each team reports its final total to the desk.
The app desk is lighter on stationery but heavier on setup. Check that every scorer has the app open and the right team before the horn, or you fix it one phone at a time in the car park.
What paper costs you at the scoring desk
Paper is cheap to print. The cost shows up after the round.
- Collection. Someone has to chase every card. Shotgun fields finish together, so cards arrive in one rush.
- Legibility. Smudged 4s that look like 9s, crossed out holes, and missing team names.
- Recount. Every card needs adding up, and ideally a second person checks the total.
- Entry. Totals go onto a board or spreadsheet by hand before you can announce.
- Ties. Tiebreaks like back nine or last 6 holes mean going back to the card, hole by hole. See scramble tiebreaker rules.
Each step is a place for an error and a reason the presentation starts late.
What an app changes at the desk
- No adding up. Each team's total is calculated on the phone.
- No legibility problems. Hole scores are typed, not scrawled.
- Tiebreaks read from the team's stored hole scores instead of a smudged card.
- Teams report finished totals as they come in, so the desk builds the board instead of recounting it. See live scramble leaderboard for the clubhouse reveal.
What a group app does not do: push every team's score to one central board mid-round. That is outing software. Either way, someone still confirms final scores with captains before prizes, and you still need a plan for a team whose phone dies.
The hybrid setup most organisers land on
- App as the scoring record. One scorer per team enters hole scores.
- Paper card in every cart as backup. Printed from the printable golf scramble scorecard or built from the scramble scorecard template.
- Rule on the sheet: if the app and the paper card disagree, say which one wins, and have the captain sign off.
- Dead phone rule: the team keeps score on paper and hands the card in at the desk, where a volunteer adds it to the board.
- Desk check: captains confirm their total at the desk, then you lock scores before the announcement.
Hybrid keeps the speed of the app and gives you a paper trail if something is disputed.
Which should you pick?
- Paper only if the field is small, phones are unreliable, and you have volunteers to add cards.
- Group app plus paper backup for most club, corporate, and charity days where you want fast, clean totals at the desk.
- Outing software if you need a field-wide board updating live during the round.
Should organisers use paper scorecards or a scoring app for a scramble?
It depends on field size and desk capacity. Paper is simple to hand out but costs time after the round in collection, legibility, recounting, and ties. An app moves that work into setup before the event. Many organisers use a hybrid: app as the record, paper card in each cart as backup.
What do you hand out at check-in for app scoring?
A named scorer per team with the app installed, team names that match the pairing sheet, instructions for reporting the final total, and a backup paper card in each cart. Outing software adds an event code or QR.
How do you handle a team whose phone dies?
Publish a dead phone rule: the team scores on the backup paper card and hands it in at the desk, where a volunteer adds it before scores lock.
