Scramble Tiebreaker Rules

Two teams finish with the same total. You need a tiebreaker that was printed before the first tee.

The default for stroke-play style events is a matching scorecards countback. Publish it. Alternatives only work if everyone heard them at the briefing.

How to break a scramble tie (HowTo)

    1. Confirm both teams are in the same division (gross vs net, same flight)
    2. Use the method printed on the rules sheet (default below if that's what you published)
    3. Apply matching scorecards on the holes listed, not "whichever holes we played last"
    4. If still tied after the full countback, use your published next step (split, playoff, or CTP)
    5. Post the result and move the prize table on

    USGA matching scorecards (primary)

For a tied total, compare scorecards in this order:

    1. Last nine: holes 10-18
    2. If still tied: Last six: holes 13-18
    3. If still tied: Last three: holes 16-18
    4. If still tied: hole 18

Lowest score on that stretch wins.

    Shotgun starts

A shotgun does not change which holes you compare.

You still use holes 10-18, then 13-18, then 16-18, then 18. You do not use "the last nine holes we happened to play after the horn."

Same cards. Same hole numbers. More on running one in shotgun start scramble.

    Gross vs net countback

Gross division: compare gross hole scores on those stretches.

Net division: use the net method printed for the round.

Common approaches: compare net hole scores with strokes as allocated on the sheet, or deduct a fraction of the team Playing Handicap from the gross for that stretch (often 1/2 for holes 10-18, 1/3 for 13-18, 1/6 for 16-18). Scrambles often publish one team allowance for the round. Say how that maps to countback before the horn.

Don't switch methods after the cards are in.

    Frequently asked questions

How do you break a tie in a golf scramble?

Usually matching scorecards: last nine (holes 10-18), then last six (13-18), then last three (16-18), then the 18th. Publish any playoff or CTP alternative before play.

Does a shotgun change the countback holes?

No. Still compare holes 10-18 and so on by hole number, not by order played.

Gross or net for the tiebreaker?

Same as the division. Gross flight uses gross. Net flight uses net with the published stroke method.

Can we use a playoff instead?

Yes if it was on the rules sheet before the round.

What if the cards still match after hole 18?

Use the next published step, or split, or whatever the sheet says. Don't invent a new rule at the desk.
