How to run a live scramble leaderboard
Skip the paper pile at the turn. Give each scramble group one phone, post live scores as holes finish, and save the clubhouse TV reveal for when the shotgun comes in together. Keep a paper backup printed.
This guide is for corporate and charity organisers who want a live feel without pretending one buddy app replaces a full-field outing desk board.
Honest split: buddy cards vs outing software
Scrambled Eggs = buddy / group live cards. One phone per group. One scorer holds the card. The team sees its own score update hole by hole. Ambrose and scramble team scoring, course finder, and shot contribution (who drove the bus). Start here: Golf Scramble Scoring App.
Outing software = full-field board. Large outings that need a live TV wallboard across every team often use dedicated tools: QR or team code check-in, one scorer per group feeding a central board, and a clubhouse wallboard that ranks the whole field. Different product class.
Do not claim Scrambled Eggs is the full-field outing TV desk. It is not. Use it for live group cards. If you need a true always-on 144-player wallboard, pair buddy cards with outing software, or build a manual clubhouse reveal from collected live totals.
Practical hybrid. Live group cards all day. Collect or screenshot finals as groups finish. Build the clubhouse TV reveal from those totals when the shotgun comes in. Paper stays printed as backup.
What you need before the shotgun
- One phone per group. One named scorer per group.
- Team names, starting holes, and net or gross format locked.
- Handicaps entered if you run a net board. Use the scramble handicap calculator or the Ambrose vs USGA dual-mode calculator before you print pairings.
- Paper backup from the printable golf scramble scorecard.
- A clubhouse screen or printed reveal sheet (hybrid), or outing software with QR / team code for a true field wallboard.
- A named desk owner at the end (not the starter).
Keep your scramble pairing sheet and shotgun start plan next to the scoring brief.
How to run live group scoring on the day
- At check-in, confirm each group has one charged phone and one named scorer.
- Open the team card before the horn. Enter team name and players once.
- Score every hole as you finish it. Do not batch at the turn.
- Mark shot contribution when it helps the story (drives that counted, putts that closed the hole).
- At the turn, do not collect paper unless a phone failed.
- As groups finish 18, send or show the live total to the desk owner.
- When the shotgun is in, sort collected live totals for the clubhouse TV or reveal board.
- Announce winners from the live totals. Use paper only to break a dispute.

Clubhouse TV reveal for a shotgun
Shotgun fields finish in a tight window. A TV board can feel live even when you built it from collected group cards.
- Park one laptop or tablet on the desk with the reveal sheet ready.
- As each group posts a final live total, drop it onto the board in standing order.
- Hold the sponsor reveal until most groups are in.
- Flash gross and net only if both were published at registration. Do not invent a second format at the microphone.
- Keep the paper stack under the desk for the group whose phone died on 16.
True always-on wallboard with QR or team codes needs outing software for that desk. Keep Scrambled Eggs on the carts for buddy scoring. Say that plan out loud.
Backup paper without slow collection
Print one card per group from the printable golf scramble scorecard. Put it in the cart with a pencil. Phone first; paper is the fail-safe. Collection at 18 is enough when live cards carried the day.

Corporate and charity tips
- Put scoring rules on the registration confirmation so captains know one phone and one scorer per group.
- Name a desk owner for the TV feed. Starters stay on the horn and carts.
- Charity auctions after golf: a clean reveal board beats a messy paper sort in front of sponsors.
- Corporate hosts: shot contribution notes make the prize table personal without slowing play.
Do you still need paper scorecards?
Yes. Print backup paper even when live cards carry the round. One printed card per group for phone failure, battery death, or a rules dispute. You do not need to collect paper at the turn if the live card is healthy.
When does a TV leaderboard update in a shotgun?
On the hybrid path, update the clubhouse TV as final live totals arrive, then run the reveal when most of the field is in. Mid-round TV updates across the whole field need outing software with a live wallboard feed. Buddy cards alone cover group play and a collected finish board.
Can Scrambled Eggs run a 144-player outing desk board?
No. Scrambled Eggs owns buddy and group live cards: one scorer, team score, course finder, and shot contribution on iOS. A full-field outing TV wallboard needs outing software or a manual clubhouse feed built from those live totals. Hybrid: live cards all day, collected reveal at the end. Golf Scramble Scoring App.
How do you set up a net live board?
Lock the scramble handicap method before the round. Enter team allowances with the scramble handicap calculator, publish gross vs net at registration, and score live on the same basis all day. Do not switch formats at the microphone.
