Scramble day-of no-shows: rebalance teams
No-shows hit at check-in, not at the first-tee briefing. Run alphabetical check-in, flag missing players against your standby list, then re-pair ABCD, carts, and starting holes before you brief the field.
Pick one short-team method on the sheet before the horn. Do not let each captain invent a different fix on the first tee.
What you need at the desk
- Alphabetical player list from registration.
- Team sheet with ABCD marks, cart numbers, and starting holes. Keep the scramble pairing sheet next to the laptop.
- Standby or waitlist contacts who can take a late call.
- Spare cart signs and hole markers.
- A quiet table away from the raffle line.
For larger fields, skim how many teams in a scramble shotgun so you know how many empty slots you can absorb before you collapse a team.
Pick one method on the sheet
When a team is short, write one method on that row. Same rule for the whole field.
- Play as 3. Three players scramble as a full team. Simple when your published rules allow it.
- Rotating 4th. Three players take turns hitting a fourth ball from the chosen spot, or rotate who sits out a shot. Write the rotation so arguments stop on hole 2.
- Ghost. A ghost ball or preset drop rule stands in for the missing player. Only if you published it before the day.
- Standby fill. Pull a waitlist player into the open slot, then update ABCD, cart, and starting hole.
One method per short team, written on the scramble pairing sheet. When several teams need a full reshuffle, run open names through the scramble team generator, then paste back onto the pairing sheet.
How to rebalance after no-shows
- Open alphabetical check-in. Tick players as they arrive.
- Flag no-shows at a hard cutoff. Example: 30 minutes before the briefing, or when the course wants carts staged. Call each flagged name once.
- Pull standby in order. Offer open slots to the waitlist before you break healthy teams. Text first, then call.
- Count short teams. A 4-person scramble that lands on 2 is usually too thin. Decide the floor before you move people.
- Write the method on each short-team row. Play as 3, rotating 4th, ghost, or standby fill.
- Rebuild ABCD balance when you move people. Do not stack all strong players into the teams that lost a weak player.
- Fix carts and starting holes in the same pass. Update cart signs and the hole map with the player moves. Leaving old stickers sends the wrong group to 14 while 7 waits.
- Rewrite the affected rows only. Do not rebuild the whole sheet if three teams changed.
- Brief the field once. Announce new teams, methods, carts, and holes. Captains confirm before the horn.
For shotgun fields, empty a hole only if you collapse a whole team and you have told the starter. See shotgun start scramble.
Late joiners: between holes only
If a registered player or standby walks in after the shotgun is out:
- Join only between holes, never mid-hole.
- Meet the group on the next tee or after the hole is finished and scored.
- Do not undo three healthy teams for one late car. Park them as standby fill on a short team, or as an alternate if your format allows a fifth.
- Update the live scorecard when they join so shot contribution stays honest.
Tell standby the cart number, starting hole, and join rule in the same text that confirms they are in.
ABCD moves that stay fair
- Prefer standby fill or play-as-3 before you raid healthy teams.
- Prefer moving one player between two short teams over stripping a full team.
- Keep at least one stronger and one softer player on each rebuilt team when you can.
- Avoid moving a whole sponsor foursome unless they agree. Move individuals from open or corporate pools first.
- Write the reason and method on the desk copy ("no-show, standby fill" or "play as 3") so the protest at the turn has a paper trail.

Standby and check-in
Hold a short standby list with mobile numbers and approximate handicaps. Call standby only after your no-show cutoff, not after every slow arriver. A clean registration and check-in cuts surprise gaps.
After the rebalance
- Hand each new team its cart sign, hole, written method, and scoring phone plan.
- Confirm team names in the scoring app so live cards match the new sheet.
- At the briefing, read only the changed teams and their short-team method.
- Start on time. A fair field on the horn beats a perfect sheet that launches late.

How do you rebalance scramble teams after no-shows?
Run alphabetical check-in, flag no-shows at a hard cutoff, fill from standby first, then pick one method on the sheet for each short team: play as 3, rotating 4th, ghost, or standby fill. Move players only as needed so ABCD, carts, and starting holes stay fair. Rewrite affected rows, brief once, and start on time. Use the scramble team generator for a clean reshuffle; keep changes on the scramble pairing sheet.
Should you move cart signs or starting holes?
Yes. Any player move that changes who shares a cart or which tee a team owns should update cart signs and the hole map in the same pass.
When is a 3-player scramble team okay?
Play as 3 is fine when that is the method you wrote on the sheet and your published rules allow it. Rotating 4th or ghost are alternatives if you briefed them. Two players is usually too thin. Collapse, merge, or standby fill before you send a pair out alone.
Can late joiners hop in mid-hole?
No. Late joiners enter between holes only. Meet the group on the next tee or after the hole is scored. Update the card when they join.
Do you rebuild the whole pairing sheet?
No. Rebuild only the teams touched by no-shows and standby fills. Keep healthy teams intact. Put the short-team method on the affected rows of the scramble pairing sheet.

Rebuild teams, then score clean
After the rebalance, put one phone on each group and score as you play. Scrambled Eggs handles Ambrose and scramble team scoring on iOS, with course finder and shot contribution so the new teams still see who drove the bus.
