How many teams fit a golf scramble shotgun
Shotgun capacity is simple course math. One group per hole gives you about 18 teams on an 18-hole course. Four-player teams put that near 72 players. A/B doubles on longer holes can push toward roughly 36 groups. Past that, use a wave start or a 9-hole scramble.
Build the field with the scramble team generator, then lock starting holes on your pairing sheet. Score on the day with Scrambled Eggs so each group keeps one team card.
Quick capacity math
Use these planning ranges. They are hole and group logic, not promises about any one club.
| Setup | Groups (teams) | Players at 4 per team |
|---|---|---|
| One group per hole (18 holes) | about 18 | about 72 |
| A/B doubles on many par 4s and 5s | toward about 36 | toward about 144 |
| 9-hole scramble, one per hole | about 9 | about 36 |
Adjust for real cart counts, staff, and how many par 3s you refuse to double. Capacity is a ceiling. Pace of play often wants you under it.
How to size your scramble field
- Count playable starting holes for a true shotgun. Usually 18.
- Decide one group per hole, or A/B on selected tees. Prefer doubles on par 4s and 5s. Avoid stacking par 3s.
- Multiply groups by team size (often 4) to get player capacity.
- If demand is higher than holes allow, split into waves or run a 9-hole event.
- Print a hole-sorted pairing sheet and run registration check-in against that list.
How many teams on a standard shotgun?
About 18 teams if you put one group on each of 18 holes. At four players per team, that is about 72 players. Some courses hold a group on a practice area or 19th hole in special cases. Do not count on that unless the club agrees in writing.
What does A/B mean for capacity?
A and B mean two teams share a starting hole. They tee in sequence (10A then 10B, for example), then play on. Doubling many par 4s and 5s can take you from about 18 groups toward about 36 groups. That roughly doubles player capacity at the same team size. It also adds tee congestion, so staff and cart logistics matter.
Mark A/B clearly on the pairing sheet so registration and the starter match.
What if you have more teams than holes?
Options, in order of simplicity:
- A/B doubles on suitable holes (par 4s and 5s first).
- Wave starts: first shotgun, then a second wave after an interval the club can support.
- 9-hole scramble if the field or daylight will not stretch to 18.
- Cap the field and waitlist extras. Better a clean day than a stalled shotgun.
Do not invent a second course or invent pace. Confirm with the club before you sell past the hole math.
