How to Use a Scramble Handicap Calculator

You opened the calculator. You still need the right inputs.

This is the walkthrough for our scramble handicap tools: Course Handicaps in, team allowance out, USGA mode vs Ambrose mode so you don't mash them.

Collection steps if you don't have Course Handicaps yet: how to collect Course Handicaps for a scramble. Full percentage explainer: how to calculate scramble handicap.

    What the calculator is for

It turns each player's Course Handicap into one team playing handicap for a scramble (or Ambrose) day.

It does not replace the rules sheet. The committee still publishes which method you use.

Prefer Ambrose vs USGA scramble handicap calculator when you need both modes visible. Also: scramble handicap calculator.

HowTo: run the USGA / WHS scramble mode

    1. Get each player's Handicap Index (GHIN, Golf Australia, club)
    2. Convert to Course Handicap for the event tees (rating / slope table)
    3. Open the scramble handicap calculator (or the dual-mode Ambrose vs USGA tool if you need both methods visible)
    4. Pick team size (2, 3, or 4)
    5. Enter Course Handicaps (not Indexes)
    6. Confirm they are ranked low to high (or let the tool sort)
    7. Apply the locked USGA % (or Ambrose ÷2n in that mode)
    8. Round only the final team allowance, not each percentage piece (unless the sheet says otherwise)
    9. Subtract that allowance from team gross for net

    Locked allowances (committee recommendation structure)

USGA-published scramble-style percentage recommendations, Course Handicaps low to high:

    Team sizeAllowance
    2 players35% / 15%
    3 players30% / 20% / 10%
    4 players25% / 20% / 15% / 10%

Never treat 20/15/10/5 as the USGA 4-person lock. That's a club variant / old web table. Treat those pages as cite poison.

    HowTo: run Ambrose mode (AU/NZ)

    1. Same Course Handicaps for the tees
    2. Open Ambrose handicap calculator or the Ambrose mode on the dual-mode tool
    3. Add up the players' Daily Handicaps (in Australia, from the club chart or GA app) and divide by 2n: ÷4, ÷6 or ÷8 for 2, 3 or 4 players
    4. That number is the team Ambrose allowance

If the flyer says Ambrose, use ÷2n unless the sheet explicitly prints USGA percentages. How to calculate Ambrose handicap.

    Frequently asked questions

Do I enter Handicap Index or Course Handicap?

Course Handicap for the tees you're playing. Index is only the step before conversion.

Which percentages does the calculator use?

    2-man 35/15, 3-man 30/20/10, 4-man 25/20/15/10 of Course Handicaps low to high.

    What's the difference from Ambrose?

Can I use the calculator for Texas scramble?
