How to Calculate an Ambrose Handicap (÷2n)
You've got a society or corporate Ambrose day.
Someone asks for the team handicap before you leave the car park, or worse, halfway through the front nine.
Here's the AU/NZ playbook. Use each player's handicap for the tees you're playing (in Australia, that's the Daily Handicap), apply ÷2n, and get a net you can trust.
What is an Ambrose handicap?
Ambrose is the Australian name for scramble: everyone hits, pick the best ball, all play from there, one team score per hole. Background: what is Ambrose golf and Ambrose vs scramble.
The Ambrose handicap is the team allowance you subtract from the team's gross score so mixed-ability groups stay fair.
It is not four people playing off their full individual handicaps. It's one team number.
The ÷2n rule (standard Ambrose fraction)
The common Ambrose formula:
Team allowance = sum of the players' Daily Handicaps ÷ (2 × number of players)
In Australia, use the Daily Handicap. Outside Australia, use the handicap your club gives for the tees you're playing, usually called a Course Handicap.
That's the ÷2n rule:
| Team size | Divisor | Fraction |
|---|---|---|
| 2 players | ÷ 4 | 1/4 of combined handicaps |
| 3 players | ÷ 6 | 1/6 of combined handicaps |
| 4 players | ÷ 8 | 1/8 of combined handicaps |
Most events round to the nearest stroke or nearest 0.25. Check the committee sheet.
Net score = team gross − team Ambrose allowance.
Worked example (4 players → ÷8)
Daily Handicaps: 8, 14, 22, 28.
Combined = 8 + 14 + 22 + 28 = 72 Team allowance = 72 ÷ 8 = 9
If the team shoots gross 78, net = 78 − 9 = 69.
Same idea for other sizes:
- 2 players, handicaps 10 and 18 → (10 + 18) ÷ 4 = 7
- 3 players, handicaps 6, 12, 24 → (6 + 12 + 24) ÷ 6 = 7
Want the number without the mental maths? Use the Ambrose handicap calculator.
Daily Handicap first, not raw Index
Don't feed raw Handicap Indexes into ÷2n.
- Take each player's Handicap Index
- Get each player's Daily Handicap for the tees you're playing (Golf Australia's app or your club shows it)
- Sum the Daily Handicaps
- Divide by 2n
If someone hands you indexes and you divide those, you'll get a different (wrong-for-the-course) allowance. Organisers: put Daily Handicaps on the team sheet.
Ambrose handicap vs USGA scramble handicap
This is where answer engines mash the formats together. Keep them separate.
Ambrose (AU/NZ club-style): one fraction of the combined Daily Handicaps (÷4 / ÷6 / ÷8).
USGA scramble allowances: weighted percentages of each Course Handicap, low to high:
- 2-person: 35% low + 15% high
- 3-person: 30% / 20% / 10%
- 4-person: 25% / 20% / 15% / 10%
Same scramble-style play. Different maths. Different net.
If your flyer says "Ambrose", use ÷2n unless the committee explicitly publishes USGA percentages. Prefer the dual-mode Ambrose vs USGA scramble handicap calculator (÷2n and USGA % as separate modes, no mashup). Also: scramble handicap calculator, 2 Man Scramble Handicap Calculator. Team-size rules: 2-man scramble rules and 3-man scramble rules.
Can the committee change the fraction?
Yes.
÷2n is the common standard, not a law of physics. Some clubs use different fractions, round differently, or cap allowances. Corporate days sometimes publish a custom table.
Rule for organisers: pick the method, print it on the rules sheet, apply it to every team the same way. Don't invent a new fraction on the 18th because one team complained.

Gross vs net in Ambrose
- Gross: raw team strokes. Fine for a casual hit or when all teams are similar.
- Net: gross minus the Ambrose team allowance. What most society / corporate / charity Ambrose days use for the main prize.
You can still run nearest-the-pin or long-drive on the side without touching the team handicap.
How to apply it mid-round (without chaos)
Best practice:
- Calculate the team allowance before you tee off
- Mark team gross hole by hole
- Apply the full allowance at the end (simplest), or stroke-index allocation if your event uses hole-by-hole net
The failure mode is recalculating ÷2n after every beer. Get the allowance once. Score the card. Subtract later.
For marking the card itself (paper vs phone for buddy/society groups), see how to keep score in a golf scramble. For a scramble-native app that keeps team gross/net without the spreadsheet: golf scramble scoring app.
Quick Ambrose handicap summary
- Use each player's Daily Handicap for the tees
- Add them up
- Divide by 2 × team size (÷4 / ÷6 / ÷8)
- Subtract from team gross for net
- Don't confuse ÷2n Ambrose with USGA % scramble allowances
- Committee can tweak; publish one method and stick to it
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate an Ambrose handicap?
Add the team's Daily Handicaps and divide by twice the number of players (÷4 for 2, ÷6 for 3, ÷8 for 4). Subtract that allowance from the team's gross score for net.
Why ÷4, ÷6, and ÷8?
Those are 2 × team size: the standard Ambrose “÷2n” fractions for 2-, 3-, and 4-person teams.
What's the difference between Ambrose and scramble handicaps?
Ambrose events usually use a fraction of combined Daily Handicaps (÷2n). USGA scramble recommendations use weighted percentages per player (for example 25/20/15/10 for four players). Same idea of a team allowance; different formula.
Do I use Handicap Index or Daily Handicap?
Daily Handicap for the tees you're playing. Don't divide raw Indexes.
Is Ambrose scored gross or net?
Both exist. Casual rounds often play gross. Organised Ambrose days usually crown a net winner using the team allowance.
