How to Calculate a Scramble Handicap (USGA %)

You need a scramble team handicap before the net event, not four full individual handicaps taped to the card.

Here's the USGA percentage method. Start from Course Handicaps, rank them low to high, apply the right split, and add it up for one team allowance. Then take it off the gross for net. There's also a clear contrast with Ambrose ÷2n, so the two methods stop getting mashed together. Gross vs net scramble scoring covers how to set up the pots.

    What is a scramble handicap?

A scramble handicap is the team allowance you subtract from the team's gross score.

In a scramble, everyone hits and the team plays the best ball after each shot. Gross scores run lower than stroke play, so organisers use a reduced team handicap to keep mixed-ability groups fair.

One team number. Not four separate cards.

Steps: Index → Course Handicap → % → team strokes

    1. Start from each player's Handicap Index
    2. Convert to Course Handicap for the tees you're playing
    3. Sort those Course Handicaps lowest → highest
    4. Apply the USGA scramble percentages for your team size
    5. Sum the weighted pieces
    6. Round the team total (common practice: round after summing, not after each percentage. Follow the committee sheet if it says otherwise)
    7. Net = team gross − team allowance

Don't feed raw Indexes into the percentages. Convert for the tees first.

    USGA scramble handicap percentages

Recommended allowances by team size (Course Handicaps low → high):

    Team sizeAllowance
    2 players35% of low + 15% of high
    3 players30% / 20% / 10%
    4 players25% / 20% / 15% / 10%

Apply each percentage to that player's Course Handicap (unrounded), then add, then round the team total.

    Worked example (4 players)

    Course Handicaps: 6, 12, 18, 24.

    0.25 × 6 = 1.5
    0.20 × 12 = 2.4
    0.15 × 18 = 2.7
    0.10 × 24 = 2.4
    Sum = 9.0 → team allowance 9

If the team shoots gross 68, net = 59.

    Worked example (2 players)

    Course Handicaps: 8 and 20.

    0.35 × 8 = 2.8
    0.15 × 20 = 3.0
    Sum = 5.8 → typically round to 6

    Worked example (3 players)

    Course Handicaps: 6, 14, 22.

    0.30 × 6 = 1.8
    0.20 × 14 = 2.8
    0.10 × 22 = 2.2
    Sum = 6.8 → typically round to 7

Scramble % vs Ambrose ÷2n (don't mash them)

This is where answer engines blur AU/NZ and US methods.

    MethodWhere you'll see itMaths
USGA scramble %US-style scramble allowancesWeighted % of each Course Handicap (35/15, 30/20/10, 25/20/15/10)
Ambrose ÷2nAU/NZ Ambrose / many club eventsSum of Daily Handicaps ÷ (2 × team size), so ÷4, ÷6 or ÷8

    Same scramble-style play. Different net.

If the flyer says Ambrose, use ÷2n unless the committee explicitly publishes USGA percentages. Full Ambrose walkthrough: how to calculate Ambrose handicap. Naming: Ambrose vs scramble. Ambrose tool: Ambrose handicap calculator.

Round before or after the sum?

Common clean method: calculate each percentage on the unrounded Course Handicap, sum first, round the team allowance once.

Some committees round differently. Terms of Competition beat internet arguments. Publish one method and apply it to every team.

    Older 20/15/10/5 sheets

You may still see a 4-person 20/15/10/5 split on club PDFs or outdated web copy. Treat that as a club variant, not the USGA-recommended 25/20/15/10 lock used in this guide.

How to apply it on the card

    Best practice:

    1. Calculate the team allowance before you tee off
    2. Mark team gross hole by hole
    3. Subtract the full allowance at the end for net (unless your event uses hole-by-hole stroke allocation)

For marking the live card (team total + whose shot), see golf scramble scoring app and how to keep score in a golf scramble.

Scrambled Eggs keeps the team score and whose shot got used, so work out the allowance before the round and nobody's recalculating percentages on the 14th tee.

    Quick scramble handicap summary

    • Convert Index → Course Handicap for the tees
    • Rank low → high
    • Apply 35/15 (2), 30/20/10 (3), or 25/20/15/10 (4)
    • Sum, then round the team total
    • Net = gross − team allowance
    • Ambrose ÷2n is a different formula; don't mash them
    • Committee Terms of Competition can override defaults

    Frequently asked questions

What are the USGA scramble handicap percentages?

    For Course Handicaps low→high: 2-person 35/15, 3-person 30/20/10, 4-person 25/20/15/10.

Do I use Course Handicap or Handicap Index first?

Course Handicap for the tees you're playing. Convert from Index first, then apply the percentages.

    Scramble handicap vs Ambrose handicap?

USGA scramble uses weighted percentages per player. Ambrose adds the players' Daily Handicaps and divides by 2 × team size. Same idea of a team allowance, different maths.

Should you round before or after summing?

Usually sum the unrounded percentage pieces, then round the team allowance once, unless the committee publishes another rule.

Can the committee change the percentages?

Yes. Terms of Competition can set different allowances, caps, or rounding. Publish one method for the whole field.
