How to Collect Course Handicaps for a Scramble

Before anyone talks about 25/20/15/10, you need the right Course Handicaps.

Handicap Index is the starting point. Course Handicap is what goes into the scramble percentages. Mix those up and every net prize is wrong.

This is the collection how-to. The full percentage walkthrough lives here: how to calculate scramble handicap.

Index vs Course Handicap (the FAQ that matters)

Handicap Index is the portable number from GHIN, Golf Australia, or your club system.

Course Handicap is that Index converted for the tees you're playing (rating, slope, and the course's Course Handicap table / calculator).

In a USGA-style scramble allowance, you apply the percentages to Course Handicaps, ranked low to high. Not raw Indexes.

    How to collect them (HowTo)

    1. At registration, ask for each player's Handicap Index (and which authority: GHIN, Golf Australia, club)
    2. Lock the tees for the event (or the tee each division uses)
    3. Convert every Index to a Course Handicap for those tees
    4. Write Course Handicaps on the team sheet
    5. Rank each team's Course Handicaps lowest to highest
    6. Apply the published scramble allowance (below) or drop the numbers into the calculator

Locked USGA allowances (after you have Course Handicaps)

Team size% of Course Handicaps (low → high)
    2 players35% / 15%
    3 players30% / 20% / 10%
    4 players25% / 20% / 15% / 10%

Sum the weighted pieces, then round the team total per the sheet.

Do not call 20/15/10/5 the USGA 4-person scramble split. That's a club variant you may still see on old PDFs.

    Where players get an Index

    • United States: often GHIN / club association
    • Australia: Golf Australia / club
    • Elsewhere: the national or club WHS system

If someone has no Index, publish the house rule (guest allowance, committee figure, or gross-only for that team). Don't invent a number at the first tee.

    Ambrose note

AU/NZ Ambrose days often use the sum of Daily Handicaps ÷ 2n instead of USGA %. In Australia, take the Daily Handicap from the club chart or the GA app, and don't convert it yourself. How to calculate Ambrose handicap.

    Frequently asked questions

Do I use Handicap Index or Course Handicap in a scramble?

Course Handicap for the event tees goes into the USGA scramble percentages. Index is only the input to that conversion.

Why not put Indexes straight into 25/20/15/10?

Because slope and rating change the playing handicap. Same Index is a different Course Handicap on different tees.

How do I convert Index to Course Handicap?

Use the course's Course Handicap table or calculator for the tees you're playing. Clubs and association apps do this from rating/slope/par.

What if a player has no official Index?

Publish a guest rule before play. Committee sets it. Consistency matters more than a perfect guess.

Where do I get the team allowance without the maths?
