How to Run an Ambrose Golf Day (Australia)

To run an Ambrose golf day in Australia, book the course and start format, set teams of 2, 3 or 4, collect each player's Daily Handicap, and set the team handicap at sum of Daily Handicaps ÷ 2n. Lock minimum drives and contests before the day, put everything on one rules sheet, score one card or one phone per group, then work nett as gross minus team handicap on your organiser sheet and do the presentation.

Ambrose is the Australian name for a scramble. This page is the AU organiser hub. For the shared US-worded pillar on booking, packets and day-of flow, see how to run a golf scramble when you need those steps in more depth.

How to run an Ambrose golf day in 9 steps

    1. Book the course and start format. Tee times or a shotgun start.
    2. Set the team size. Two, three or four players for the whole field if you can.
    3. Collect Daily Handicaps. Not a US Course Handicap, and not the raw Handicap Index.
    4. Set the Ambrose team handicap. Sum of Daily Handicaps ÷ 2n.
    5. Decide minimum drives and contests before invites go out.
    6. Write one rules sheet and keep a short rules talk for the tee.
    7. Build fair teams so the day stays mixed and fair.
    8. Score one card or one phone per group.
    9. Work nett on your sheet, then present results.

New to the format itself? Start with what is Ambrose golf and Ambrose vs scramble.

    1. Book the course and start format

Talk to the course first. Lock the date, then agree tee times or a shotgun. A shotgun gets everyone finishing together, which makes the presentation easy. Tee times suit smaller fields and quieter midweek days.

    2. Set the team size

Four-player Ambrose is the classic club and workplace day. Threes and twos work too, and they move quicker per group. Pick one size for the whole field if you can. It keeps the handicaps and the prizes simple.

    3. Collect Daily Handicaps

Ask for each player's Daily Handicap for the tees you are playing. In Australia that comes from the club chart or the GA app.

Do not collect a US Course Handicap. Do not feed raw Handicap Indexes into the team formula. A Daily Handicap is not a US Course Handicap, and you should not convert it with a US formula.

    4. Set the Ambrose team handicap (÷2n)

The common Ambrose formula in Australia:

Team allowance = sum of Daily Handicaps ÷ (2 × number of players)
    Team sizeDivisorWhat that means
    2 players÷ 4Combined Daily Handicaps ÷ 4
    3 players÷ 6Combined Daily Handicaps ÷ 6
    4 players÷ 8Combined Daily Handicaps ÷ 8

Most committees round to the nearest stroke or nearest 0.25. Print the rounding rule on the sheet and use it for every team.

Worked example (labelled example Daily Handicaps)

Example only. These are example Daily Handicaps, not real players. Four players at 8, 14, 22 and 28:

    PlayerExample Daily Handicap
    A8
    B14
    C22
    D28
    Sum72
    Team allowance (÷8)9

    If the team shoots gross 78, nett = 78 − 9 = 69 on your organiser sheet.

    Same idea for other sizes (still examples): two players at 10 and 18 give (10 + 18) ÷ 4 = 7. Three players at 6, 12 and 24 give (6 + 12 + 24) ÷ 6 = 7.

Want the number without the mental maths? Use the Ambrose handicap calculator. Full walkthrough: how to calculate an Ambrose handicap.

Do not run a USGA percentage section on an Ambrose flyer. If you ever need that method for a US-worded scramble day, use the scramble pillar, the scramble handicap calculator, or the Ambrose vs USGA scramble handicap calculator to see both methods side by side.

    5. Decide minimum drives and contests before the day

Lock these before registration closes. A minimum drives rule means each player's tee shot must be used a set number of times. That stops one long hitter carrying the group.

Pick contest holes early too: nearest the pin, long drive, or whatever fits your field. See scramble hole contests.

    6. One rules sheet and a short rules talk

One page. Format (Ambrose), team handicap method (Daily Handicaps ÷ 2n), tees, placement, putting, mulligans, minimum drives, contest holes and the tiebreak. If it is not on the sheet, groups will make it up.

Template: scramble tournament rules sheet. On the first tee, a two-minute rules talk saves you an hour of arguments later.

    7. Build fair teams

If players are not entering as set teams, build them. Rank by Daily Handicap, band the field, and mix one from each band on every team. Blind draws work for mixers.

Tools and guides: scramble team generator, how to make fair scramble teams, and golf team name generator if you need names on the cart signs.

    8. Score one card or one phone per group

Each group needs one scorer. Paper works. So does one phone. Keep a printable golf scramble scorecard as backup.

If the group uses Scrambled Eggs, one phone keeps the team score for 1 to 4 players. The scorer taps whose shot got used. The Ambrose team handicap is worked out for you, and the round saves to history. More on the golf scramble scoring app.

Field results still go on your own board or sheet from the signed cards. Do the nett maths on that organiser sheet (gross minus team handicap). Do not leave nett to guesswork on the 18th green.

    9. Presentation

Settle ties with the tiebreak on your sheet. Then head inside for awards. Keep it short: winning nett team, any gross prize you want, then contest winners.

Go deeper: scramble awards ceremony and the morning-of scramble day-of checklist.

How is the Ambrose team handicap calculated?

Add each player's Daily Handicap, then divide by twice the number of players (÷4 for 2, ÷6 for 3, ÷8 for 4). Subtract that team allowance from the team's gross for nett on your sheet.

What handicap do players need for Ambrose?

A Daily Handicap for the tees you are playing. Not a US Course Handicap, and not a raw Handicap Index. If someone has no handicap, say so on the entry form and decide a house rule before the day.

How many players in an Ambrose team?

Usually 2, 3 or 4. Fours are the classic Australian golf day size. One team size for the whole field keeps handicaps and prizes tidy.

Is Ambrose the same as a scramble?

Same pick-the-best-shot team game. Ambrose is the Australian name. Scramble is the name you will see more in US copy. Handicap habits differ: Ambrose uses Daily Handicaps ÷ 2n here; USGA-style scrambles use Course Handicap percentages. See Ambrose vs scramble.
