Scramble Minimum Drives Rule Explained
A minimum drives rule means each player's tee shot has to be used a set number of times across the round. It's usually stated per 18 holes, and the organiser picks the number to suit the team size. There's no single official number. Track it with a drive-used column on the card, or let Scrambled Eggs record whose drive got used on each hole.
It's the rule behind most Texas scrambles. Here's how it works and how to stay on top of it.
What is the minimum drives rule?
In a plain scramble, you use the best drive every time. If one player is bombing it, the team rides them all day.
Minimum drives stop that. Each player must have their drive chosen at least a certain number of times. Everyone contributes off the tee, and teams have to make real choices on some holes.
It's the core twist in a Texas scramble. Other formats borrow it too.
How many drives per player?
There's no official number. The organiser sets it on the rules sheet.
The logic is simple. Players on the team times the minimum has to fit inside the holes you play, with a few holes left free. Smaller teams mean each player drives more.
Common house choices look like this. They are examples, not rules:
| Team size | Common house choice per player (18 holes) |
|---|---|
| 4-person | 3 or 4 drives each |
| 3-person | 4 or 5 drives each |
| 2-person | 6 to 8 drives each |
Playing 9 holes? Most organisers roughly halve the number. Whatever you choose, write the exact number on the sheet.
How to run minimum drives (step by step)
- Set the number before the day. Pick it for your team size and put it on the rules sheet.
- Brief it at the start. Say the number, and say what happens if a team falls short.
- Name one scorer per team. One person marks drives, not four.
- Mark whose drive was used on every hole. An initial in the drive column, or a tap in the app.
- Check tallies at the turn. Work out who still needs drives and how many holes are left.
- Plan the back nine. Use a weaker drive on a short or easy hole, not the hardest par 4.
- Check again before the closing holes. Don't find out on 17 that someone needs three more.
- Confirm at the end. The scorer checks every player hit the minimum before the card goes in.
Tracking drives on the card
Paper works if you set it up right.
- Add a drive-used column next to the team score.
- Pre-print player initials so marks are consistent.
- Tally OUT and IN totals for each player.
- Have the attester check the tally, not just the score.
The scramble scorecard template has a layout with the drive-used column built in.
The weak spots are rain, beer and forgetting to write the initial after a long walk to the next tee.
How Scrambled Eggs tracks whose drive got used
Scrambled Eggs is built for group and buddy scrambles. One phone per group. The scorer enters the team score and taps whose shot got used.
That gives you a running record of who drove the bus, hole by hole. You can check where each player stands at the turn instead of counting margin scribbles. At the end, you see who carried the team. More on that in who drove the bus.
It's a live card for your group. It isn't field-wide tournament software, so the organiser still collects results the way the sheet says.

What happens if a team misses the minimum?
It's up to the organiser. Common options are a penalty stroke per missing drive or counting the round as out of the prizes. Pick one and put it on the sheet so nobody argues after the round.
Does a drive have to be used on a par 3?
Usually yes, a par 3 tee shot counts as a drive. Some events say otherwise, so check the sheet.
Do minimum drives apply in a 2-person scramble?
Only if the sheet says so. A plain 2-person scramble has no drive quota. Some pairs events borrow the Texas rule, with a higher number per player.
Can the same drive count for two players?
No. Each hole's chosen drive belongs to one player. Mark one initial per hole.
