4-Man Scramble Rules

Four players. One team ball. The default scramble size for charity days, corporate outings, and weekend foursomes.

Here's how a 4-man scramble works, how the USGA 25/20/15/10 handicap split fits, and how to mark the card without chaos.

    What is a 4-man scramble?

A 4-man scramble is the classic scramble team size.

All four players tee off. The team picks the best drive. All four play from that spot. Pick the best shot again. Repeat until the ball is holed.

One team score per hole. Lowest net (or gross) wins.

Same format as a 2-man or 3-man scramble, just more balls to choose from. Broader explainer: what is a golf scramble. In Australia you'll often hear Ambrose for the same game. See Ambrose vs scramble.

4-man scramble rules (step by step)

    1. All four players tee off each hole
    2. Choose the best tee shot
    3. All four hit the next shot from the chosen spot (respect placement / same-lie rules on the sheet, often within a club-length, not nearer the hole)
    4. Choose the best of those shots
    5. Continue through chips and putts until holed
    6. Write one team score for the hole
    7. Add 18 holes for gross; subtract the team handicap for net

On the green, everyone usually putts from the same marked spot (not four different reads from different club-lengths). Check the event sheet.

    Handicap for a 4-man scramble (USGA 25/20/15/10)

USGA-recommended scramble allowance for four players (Course Handicaps sorted low → high):

    • 25% of the lowest
    • 20% of the second-lowest
    • 15% of the third
    • 10% of the highest
    • Add for the team allowance

Apply the percentages to each Course Handicap (unrounded), then round the team total. Same approach as the 2-man and 3-man USGA splits.

    Illustrative example only. Course Handicaps 6, 12, 18, 24:

    0.25 × 6 = 1.5
    0.20 × 12 = 2.4
    0.15 × 18 = 2.7
    0.10 × 24 = 2.4
    Team allowance = 9.0

Net = gross − team allowance.

    Ambrose / club 4-person method

AU/NZ Ambrose days often use combined Daily Handicaps ÷ 8 instead of 25/20/15/10. Full walkthrough: how to calculate Ambrose handicap. Prefer Ambrose vs USGA scramble handicap calculator (÷8 vs 25/20/15/10 as separate modes). Also: scramble handicap calculator / 4 Man Scramble Handicap Calculator.

Use Course Handicap, not raw Handicap Index. Convert for the tees first. Pick one method for the whole field. Don't mix ÷8 and 25/20/15/10 on the same leaderboard.

Note: some older sheets and pages still print a 20/15/10/5 club variant. That is not the USGA-recommended 4-person scramble split used here.

How to keep score in a 4-man scramble

    One card. One marker.

    Each hole:

    • Team strokes
    • Whose shot was used (drive / approach / putt) if you care about contribution, or if Texas / Florida rules apply
    • Optional running vs par

    4-man vs Texas vs Florida

    FormatExtra rule
Plain 4-man scrambleBest ball every shot; no drive quota; no sit-outs
Texas scrambleMinimum drives from each player across the round
Florida scramble (step-aside)Player whose shot is chosen sits out the next stroke

All three still record one team score per hole. Minimum drives are a Texas add-on, not a default 4-man rule. If the sheet doesn't say Texas or Florida, play plain scramble.

    Charity / corporate 4-man days

Four is the default team size for most organised scrambles.

Agree before the first tee (or print it on the rules sheet):

    • Placement rule and putting rule
    • Gross vs net + which handicap method
    • Any Texas minimum-drives or other local twists
    • Who marks each team's card

Bigger fields need outing ops (check-in, flights, prizes). Your own foursome still only needs a clean team card. Organiser pages: corporate golf day scoring and charity golf scramble scoring.

    Quick 4-man scramble rules summary

    • All four hit; pick best; all play from there; one team score
    • USGA scramble allowance: 25% / 20% / 15% / 10% of Course Handicaps (low → high)
    • Ambrose/club alternative: sum ÷ 8
    • Min drives = Texas; sit-outs = Florida, only if the sheet says so
    • Mark whose shot was used if you want fair banter (or side prizes)

    Frequently asked questions

    What is a 4-man scramble?

A four-player team scramble: everyone hits, the team chooses the best ball each time, and you record one team score per hole.

What is the 4-man scramble handicap (25/20/15/10)?

The USGA-recommended scramble allowance for four players: 25% of the lowest Course Handicap, 20% of the second, 15% of the third, and 10% of the highest. Ambrose events often use sum ÷ 8 instead.

How do you keep score in a 4-man scramble?

Are there minimum drives in a 4-man scramble?

Not by default. Minimum drives are the Texas scramble twist. Plain 4-man scramble lets you pick the best drive every hole.

4-man vs Texas vs Florida: what's the difference?

Plain 4-man: best ball only. Texas: plus minimum drives per player. Florida: the chosen player sits out the next stroke.
